'Maine Pyar Kiya' (Released 29 Dec, 1989)
Salman Khan's best (and most successful) work has been with Sooraj Barjatya. The fact that this director with a Midas touch has cast the Khan brat in three consecutive films stands testimony to his faith in the brawn-man. Their first film together, was Barjatya's debut and Salman's second. In a tearjerker romance, stuffed with righteousness, family values and pleasant music, the duo struck a pot of gold. Not only did 'Maine Pyar Kiya' break all kinds of box-office records, it made Salman the hot new kid on the block.
'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' (Released 5 Aug, 1994)
His second film with Barjatya only surpassed the success of the first. 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' registered its name in the history books as Bollywood's biggest hit ever! Salman was generous enough to play second fiddle to his sensational leading lady, Madhuri Dixit, despite being a mega star in his own right. But eventually, the film's success did rub off on him as well, and he joined Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan at the top of the star ratings.
'Khamoshi- The Musical' (Released 9 Aug, 1996)
Most stars have strong preferences when it comes to directors. And Sanjay Leela Bhansali heads Salman's list. For obvious reasons. Bhansali cast Salman in the unusual role of a soft, sensitive music composer, Raj, who loves the daughter of a deaf-mute couple. A clean break from his 'muscleman' image, 'Khamoshi' offered Salman a rare opportunity to display his range as an actor. And although the film failed to charm the masses, it still won the star high praise for his performance.
